Matt Spier Takes Home Second MIAC Weekly Honor

Bloomington, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus men’s golfer Matt Spier (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) capped the 2014-15 season with the best round of his junior year and was rewarded by the MIAC sports information directors with the MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week award.

With an open date remaining in their regular season schedule, the Gusties took advantage of it by taking part in the four-team, UW-Eau Claire StoneRidge Classic held Friday, May 1 in Stillwater, Minnesota. Spier took advantage as well, shooting a season-best four-under-par 68 to place second overall alongside Bethel University’s Dillon John. Only UW-Eau Claire’s Jake Erickson, who shot two strokes better with a six-under 66, beat the two MIAC contenders. At the end of the one round meet, Gustavus finished second with a 281 (-7); the team’s best single round this season.

Spier, who was named the MIAC Golfer-of-the-Week earlier this season on April 8, finishes the 2014-15 campaign with a stroke average of 76.3 (2nd/team). The Prior Lake product was especially good this spring, carrying a stroke average of 75.6 in 12 rounds, shooting under par in three rounds, and posting two top ten finishes in tournament play.
