FARGO, N.D. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team defeated Concordia College 9-0 and Division II Moorhead State University 6-3 on Sunday at Courts Plus in Fargo, North Dakota. The two wins move the Gusties to 8-0 in the MIAC and 13-12 overall.
“Despite having a mentally-draining match yesterday against Carleton and a long drive up to Fargo this morning, our girls really came ready to play today,” said assistant coach Heidi Carlson. “I thought everyone came out and played smart, yet aggressive tennis. I’m proud of the way we fought through a long day and continued to improve in process.”
Gustavus began its day with a 9-0 thumping of Concordia College in which it dropped just two total games in doubles and eight in singles to remain perfect in conference play heading into its match against St. Thomas (8-0 MIAC) next Saturday.
The Gusties then took on Moorhead State University and continued to find success against the Division II Dragons. Laurel Krebsbach (Sr., North Oaks, Minn.)/Sid Dirks (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) and Katie Aney (Fy., Rochester, Minn.)/Ally Baker (Fy., Rosemount, Minn.) picked up 8-3 and 8-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, to give Gustavus a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The Gusties then got singles wins from Krebsbach at No. 2, Stanczyk at No. 3, Aney at No. 4 and first-year Taylor Shortly (Lindstrom, Minn.) at No. 5 to secure the 6-3 victory.
With an MIAC Championship on the line for both teams, Gustavus and the University of St. Thomas will compete next Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Paul Academy.
“Our goal all year has been to win a conference championship,” said Carlson. “With efforts like we gave today and all through the season, I’m confident our team will be prepared for next Saturday.”
