St. Peter, Minn. – Freshman golfer Chris Captain (Rochester, Minn.) and junior middle hitter Alyssa Taylor (Trimont, Minn.) have been selected as the Gustavus Adolphus College October Male and Female Student-Athletes-of-the-Month, as selected by the Gustavus Sports Information Department.

Playing with poise and maturity well beyond his years, Captain turned in the best performance of his young career during the fall season’s biggest meet by taking home individual medalist honors at the 2014 MIAC Championships…Captain shot a 217 (+1) over the course of the three-day event…Went into final day in second place, carded an eagle on hole four and recorded eight birdies on the back nine to conclude the tournament with a weekend best 70 (-2) and take the MIAC individual crown by three strokes…Captain became Gustavus’s 17th individual medalist and fourth freshman to win the individual title…Thanks in large part to his performance, Gustavus finished runner-up at the MIAC Championships with a team score of 912 (+48).

A consistent force at the net throughout October, middle hitter Alyssa Taylor was dominant during her best month of the 2014 season…Taylor led the Gusties in kills in seven-out-of-eight October matches, which included reaching double-figure kills in all seven of those matches…She turned in a month-high 20 kills against St. Olaf in a five set victory on Oct. 8 and tallied hitting percentages above .400 in six-of-eight matches…On Oct. 18 in a sweep of Luther, the Trimont native registered a season-best attack percentage of .714 after totaling 11 kills and making just one error…In all, Taylor recorded a 103 kills (12.9 kpm) and an efficient attack percentage of .417 in October…To go along with her offensive presence, Taylor also led the team in blocks with a total of 24 for an average of three per match…Gustavus went 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC over the month.
