The Gustavus women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as they fell to Whitworth University by a score of 1-0 on Sunday on the Gustavus Soccer Field. After 73 scoreless minutes, Lindsey Oakes found the back of the net for the Pirates to give Whitworth the lead for good. Gustavus falls to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 2-0.
The Gusties played tough throughout the match, as the game was played primarily in the midfield with neither team getting many clean looks at the goal. As the first half ended, Whitworth held an 8-2 shot advantage but could not capitalize.
As the second half progressed, both teams continued to play well defensively. However, Whitworth was able to capitalize on its opportunities, recording 13 shots in the second period, one of which got past Gustie goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer to seal the win for the Pirates. The game was very physical on both sides, with Gustavus receiving 14 fouls, and the Pirates being whistled for 13 of their own. Bayer stopped 13 shots on the game, and the goal given up was only her first of the season. Whitworth goalkeeper Krista Dietz stopped 2 shots to record her second shutout of the season.
Gustavus will hit the road for their next game as the team heads down to Pella, Iowa to play Central College at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12.
