The Gustavus women’s soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 11-0 win
over Martin Luther College on Friday at the Gustavus Soccer Field. Junior forward Ashley
Anderson led the Gusties with three goals (all in the first half), while Jordan Brunsberg
tallied the first two goals of her collegiate career. Goalkeepers Chelsea Bayer and
Jessica Richert combined to get the shutout for Gustavus.
The Gusties jumped out to an early lead when Ashley Anderson scored in the second minute
of the contest. A short while later, Becca Hagen pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal in
the 16th minute. Anderson added her second and third goals of the game in a span of :90 seconds after Hagen’s goal to give the Gusties a 4-0 lead. The Gusties would tally four
more goals in the final 25 minutes of the first including goals by McMillan (21:02),
Jordan Brunsberg (28:23), Abbey Maus (31:18), and Brunsburg again (38:53). Gustavus outshot Martin Luther 22-0 in the first half.
The Gusties opened the second half much like they started the first, as Kirsten Thulien
scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Abbey Maus in the 49th minute.
Katie Eslinger (67:48) and Kristen Moen (68:25) scored the final two goals for Gustavus one-minute apart midway through the second half. The Gusties ended the match with a 41-0 shot advantage against the Knights.
The 11 goals scored by Gustavus are the most in a game since the Gusties defeated Hamline 12-0 in October of 1996. The 11 goals in a game ranks third all-time for most goals
scored in a game in the program’s history. The record is 13 set against Wartburg College
in 1994. The Gusties, who scored 27 goals in 18 games last season, have now scored 16
goals in two games this season. Ashley Anderson and Meghan McMillan lead the team in scoring as both have registered three goals and one assist for seven points.
The Gustie women play again on September 6, at 11:00am on the Gustavus Soccer Field against Whitworth University.
