Volleyball Posts 1-1 Record On First Day Of UW-Eau Claire Invite Posted on September 4th, 2009 by

The Gustavus volleyball team split its first two matches of the UW-Eau Claire Invitational Tournament on Friday evening. In the first match of the day, Gustavus fell to UW-Stout 3-0. The scores for the sets were 22-25, 23-25, and 13-25. The Gusties rebounded to win their second match by a score of 3-0 over Judson University of Illinois. The scoring for the second match was 25-16, 25-21, and 25-16. The Gusties are now 1-2 overall on the young season.

Middle hitter Meghan Gehring led the offense in the first match with 11 kills, while setters Malea Noennig and Sam Broderius helping with 19 and 12 assists, respectively. Defensive specialist Erin Sherman chipped in with 17 digs. UW-Stout was led by Kate Mikutowski’s 12 kills.

In the second match, Gustavus registered its first win of the season with a convincing 3-0 win over Judson University by a score of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-16. Senior captain Meghan Gehring led the team with 12 kills, while Angela Ahrendt added 11 and Olivia Warren contributed 10. Erin Sherman led the team in digs with 16. Judson was led by offensively by Carissa Oelke’s 14 kills.

Gustavus will close out the UW-Eau Claire with two matches on Saturday. The Gusties will face St. Scholastica at 12:15 p.m. and then finish against host UW-Eau Claire at 2:30 p.m.
