Volleyball To Open MIAC Play Against St. Catherine Wednesday Night

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team will begin the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of its 2014 schedule with a home match against St. Catherine University on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. on Gus Young Court.

The Gusties head into a their first non-tournament match with an overall record of 4-8 after a 1-3 showing at the Gustie Invitational held last weekend. The Wildcats head into conference play with an overall record of 8-5 after going 2-2 at the UW-Oshkosh Tournament held last weekend in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The Series…
Wednesday night’s game will be the 66th meeting between Gustavus and St. Catherine in volleyball. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 38-24-2. In last season’s meeting on Oct. 30 in St. Paul, Gustavus came away with a 3-2 victory after a back-and-forth match and a 15-10 win in the decisive fifth set.

Ones To Watch…
– Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) | Led Gustavus with 51 kills and an attack percentage of .301 last weekend at the Gustie Invitational. She posted a season-best 22 kills against Simpson and now leads the team with 117 kills (2.49 k/s) on the year.
– Marissa Morgan (Fy., Rockford, Ill.) | Served as Gustavus’s primary setter over all four matches last weekend. She posted a total of 167 set assists (41.8 asst./s) to go along with 44 digs. Morgan ranks fourth in the MIAC with 334 assists.
– Shanee Herd (So., Alexandria, Minn.) | Finished the UW-Oshkosh Tournament with double-digit digs in the final three matches including a season-best 27 against UW-Superior in the weekend finale. Herd is currently the fifth-ranked defensive player in the MIAC with 192 digs and a 4.8 digs per set average.

By The Numbers…
2 – The number of double-doubles frosh Sammy Kremer (Lakeville, Minn.) registered at the Gustie Invitational. An all-around threat, Kremer has played in 11-of-12 matches and is averaging 6.8 kills and 7.2 digs per match.
92 – The league-leading number of blocks Gustavus has tallied this season. Individually, Alyssa Taylor leads the MIAC with 48 blocks (19 solo).
