Sauk Centre, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team improved three spots to finish ninth overall with a two-day team score of 630 (+54) at the Saint John’s Fall Invitational held this weekend at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course on Saturday and GreyStone Golf Course on Sunday. After recording a 318 on the opening day, the Gusties improved with a 312 on day two. Andrew Brandt (Jr., Medina, Minn.) led Gustavus with a tenth place finish after shooting a nine-over-par 153.
“It was better today, but we still made some costly mistakes,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “We have some young players who are still learning how to play tournament golf at this level, so it’s a work in progress. With that said, we are getting better and that’s exciting to see. When this group plays well and begins to put it together, we will be very tough to beat.”
Winning the event was the University of St. Thomas who recorded a tournament-best 301 on Sunday to finish with a 609 (+33) over the weekend. Saint John’s University finished runner-up with a 612 (+36), and Nebraska Wesleyan University rounded out the top three in third with a 614 (+38).
After shooting a 77 (+5) at Blackberry Ridge on Saturday to finish the round in 20th, Brandt posted a 76 (+4) today at Greystone to propel himself into a 10th place standing by the conclusion of the tournament. His finish is the best of the season and the first time this year he has cracked the top 10.
Behind Brandt was Matt Spier (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) in 22nd with an 81-75-156 (+12). Andrew Krasaway (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.), who played on Gustavus’s second team, finished 22nd alongside Spier with a 78-78-156 (+12).
Alex Kapraun of St. Thomas took home individual medalist honors with a one-under 143 (74-69). Ned Rohrbach of Carleton College finished second with a 73-71-144 (E), while Drew Lynch and Morgan Rask of Saint John’s along with Hayden Thomson of Nebraska Wesleyan finished in a three-way tie for third with 150s (+6).
The Gustavus men’s golf team will head back into tournament play next weekend when it travels to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the UW-Eau Claire Invitational. The tournament will be contested on Sept. 21-22 at the Eau Claire Country Club.
