The Gustavus men’s swimming team turned in a strong final day and finished ninth at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. The ninth place finish is the highest at the national meet in the program’s history. The Gusties scored 119.5 points. Kenyon College finished first with 678.5 points.
Gustie highlights for the final day of the three-day national meet included the 400 yard free relay team finishing fifth and Scott Hagemeyer finishing 13th in the 100 yard freestyle.
The 400 yard free relay team, which consisted of Will Sutor, Brian Amundson, Seth Weidmann and Scott Hagemeyer, posted a time of 3:06.63 in the finals. All four swimmers receive All-America honors by virtue of finishing in the top eight.
Scott Hagemeyer wrapped up an outstanding national meet by earning valuable points in the 100 free. He recorded a time of :46.71 to finish 13th and earn honorable mention All-America honors.
During the three-day meet, Gustavus claimed All-America performances by the 200 free relay team (5th place), the 400 medley relay team (eighth), the 400 free relay team (fifth) and Scott Hagemeyer in the 50 freestyle (fifth). The team also added points by the 800 free relay team (14th), the 200 medley relay team (10th and Will Sutor in the 100 butterfly (11th).
The Gusties previous best finish at the NCAA Championships was 26th in 2000 and the most points the team had ever scored was 40 also in 2000.
