The Gustavus softball team scored 26 runs in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Buena Vista (9-0, 17-1) at the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Minn. First year player Lisa Klass had big day for the Gusties as she went 5-for-5 at the plate including a home run in her first at-bat as a collegiate player. Erin Truebenbach was the winning pitcher in game one, while Betsy Collins picked up the win in game two. The Gusties will face UW-La Crosse at 11 am on Sunday morning at the Rosemount Dome.
Gustavus combined power with quality pitching in game one. Senior outfielder Emily Klein, first year second baseman Lisa Klass, and junior outfielder Sheila Arnold all hit home runs for the Gusties, while sophomore Erin Truebenbach threw four shutout innings. Junior Betsy Collins threw the final three innings and combined with Truebenbach for the shutout.
In game two, Gustavus exploded for eight runs in the first inning and then cruised to a 17-1 victory. Kirsten Prunty went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs. Betsy Collins pitched two innings and allowed one run. Junior Callie Nelson pitched the final three innings for the Gusties.
