Coon Rapids, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s golf team concluded the 2013 MIAC Championships with a 326 (+38) in Monday’s third and final round to finish third with a three-round total of 972 (+108). Along with the third place team finish, two individuals finished in the top 10 to earn their way onto the All-Championship team. Sam Falk (Jr., Glenwood, Minn.) finished eighth to earn her third consecutive All-MIAC mark, while Mae Meierhenry (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished tied for 10th to take her place on the All-Championship team for the first time in her young career.
After carding an opening-round 320 (+32) on Saturday to tie for fourth, the Gusties moved into third after totaling a 326 (+38) in yesterday’s second round. With today’s 326 (+38), Gustavus finished third with the 972 (+108), 20 shots behind Carleton, who finished second with a weekend total of 952 (+88). The Knights finished just one stroke behind St. Thomas, who combined scores of 320 (+32), 317 (+29), and 314 (+26) to total 951 (+87) for the tournament and claim its ninth MIAC Championship in program history.
New to this year’s conference tournament, the top 10 players were named to the MIAC All-Championship team and will be awarded All-Conference honors following the spring season. Five at-large spots are also available on the All-Conference team for individuals to earn with their play throughout the fall and spring seasons. On Monday, two Gusties took their place on the All-Championship team.
After shooting identical seven-over-par 79s in the first two rounds, Sam Falk turned in an 11-over-par 83 on Monday to finish with a weekend total of 241 (+25). As the top Gustavus finisher, Falk finished eighth in the individual standings, which was good enough to earn All-Championship team status for the third consecutive year. Behind Falk, Mae Meierhenry came back from a 14-over 86 on Saturday and a 10-over 82 on Sunday to shoot a four-over 76 on Monday and finish in a three-way tie for 10th with a 244 (+28) on the weekend. With her performance, Meierhenry makes her way on to the All-Championship team in her first season as a Gustie.
Lauren Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) was the third-highest finisher for Gustavus. Johnson concluded the weekend tied for 13th with a weekend total of 245 (+29). Following Johnson was Jordan Drenttel (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), who posted a 16th place finish with a score of 248 (+32). Rounding out the Gustavus lineup was Liz Strom (Jr., Fargo, N.D.). Strom carded a 251 (+35) on the weekend to finish tied for 20th.
While St. Thomas enjoyed the team title, Shannon Holden of Carleton claimed individual medalist honors. Holden went 77-77-75 for a total of 229 (+13) for the weekend, finishing two strokes in front of St. Thomas’ Erin Dingmann.
