Le Sueur, Minn. – The 2013 Twin Cities Classic came to a close on Monday afternoon, and the Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team finished in fourth place with a three-day team-total of 913 (+49). The Gusties remained in fourth from start to finish, shooting a 306 on the final round held at the Le Sueur Country Club.
Winning the three-day meet was the University of Manitoba who shot a 308 on day three to end up with a 903 (+39). Saint John’s University moved up one spot from its day two standing, finishing runner up with a 910 (+46) after firing a 305 on day three. Rounding out the top three spots of the podium was UW-Eau Claire who dropped to third (912, +48) after shooting a 316 on Monday.
Leading the way for the Gusties was Matt Jensen (Jr., Edina, Minn.). After struggling on day two and dropping down to 22nd place, Jensen bounced back big on Monday at Gustavus’s home course. The junior shot a season-low even-par 70 to move up 20 spots into a second place standing with a tournament total of 222 (+6).
Alongside Jensen in second place were Alex Kapraun of St. Thomas and Scott Mazur of Manitoba. Individual medalist honors went to UW-Eau Claire’s Brady Hanson who consistently shot in the low 70s all weekend. Hanson capped the meet with a two-over-par 72, ending up with the top score by four strokes at 218 (+2).
Also cracking the top five following a three-over 72 in his final round was senior Tyler McMorrow (St. Cloud, Minn.). McMorrow finished fifth with a seven-over-par 223 (+7).
Rounding out Gustavus’s first team was Andrew Brandt (So., Medina, Minn.) who placed 23rd with a 231 (+15) after carding an 83 (+13) on Monday. Andrew Oakes (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) finished 51st with a 239 (+23), and Lee Bystrom (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) took 62nd with a 241 (+25). Oakes went 82 (+12) on day three, while Bystrom registered an 81 (+11).
Also making noise on Gustavus’s second team was Andrew Krasaway (So., Hermantown, Minn.) who shot a season-best two-under-par 68 to come in eighth with a 225 (+9) total.
With the 2013 fall regular season in the books, the Gustavus men’s golf team will now prepare for the MIAC Championships set to take place on Oct. 5-7 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. The Gusties enter the meet as the reigning MIAC Champion after recording a three-day 885 (+21) at last season’s competition.
