The Gustavus women’s basketball continued its winning ways with a convincing 71-60 win over Concordia College at Gus Young Court on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties dominated from the perimeter as Molly Geske (21), Emily Nelson (20), and Julia Schultz (14) scored 55 of the team’s 71 points. Gustavus made 10-of-15 shots from behind the arc including 7-of-10 in the second half. Coach Mickey Haller’s squad is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC.
Gustavus started the game with a 7-2 run, however the Cobbers countered with a 8-2 run to take its only lead of the game at 10-9. The Gusties used a 7-0 run midway through the half to take an eight point lead at 25-17. The Cobbers cut the lead to three at 28-25 with 3:12 left in the first half, but Emily Nelson hit a jumper for Gustavus with :44 left and the Gusties led by five at the intermission, 30-25.
A three-point basket by Julia Schultz at 15:52 of the second half pushed the Gustavus lead to 10 points at 42-32. A jumper by Molly Geske with 6:58 remaining gave the Gusties their largest lead of the game at 18 points, 64-46. Concordia countered with a 12-0 run to cut the lead to six points at 64-58 with 3:55 left to play, however Gustavus outscored the Cobbers 7-2 the rest of the game to claim the 71-60 victory. First year wing Molly Geske scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half including 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc to allow the Gusties to hold off the Cobbers.
Gustavus returns to play on Monday as it will host Saint Mary’s at 7:30 pm.
