The Gustavus men’s tennis team had a strong showing at the first day of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional being held at the Swanson Tennis Center and the Brown Outdoor Courts on the Gustavus campus as six players advanced to the Round of 16 and four teams advanced to the third round in doubles. The tournament continues on Saturday and finishes with both singles and doubles championships on Sunday.
Leading the way for the Gusties were seniors John Kauss and Mike Burdakin, who picked up several wins in doubles and singles. Kauss, the top-seeded player in the singles draw, began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Aaron Gendron of Luther in the second round. He followed that with win over Kevin Goihl of Saint John’s 6-0, 6-0. As the sixth-seed, Burdakin defeated Michael Coleman of Macalester 6-0, 6-2 in the second round. Burdakin advanced to the fourth round after St. Olaf’s Knute Gundersen was forced to retire early in the first set trailing 3-0.
Other players moving on to the Round of 16 include eighth-seed Charlie Paukert, 17th-seed Kevin Stickney, Patrick Clark and Ashok Jethwa. Paukert posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Doug Marmar of UW-La Crosse and a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jon Aranda of Carleton. Stickney won in similar fashion as he defeated Nathan Fekete of UW-La Crosse 6-1, 7-5 followed by 11th-seed Winston Park of Carleton 6-3, 6-1. Clark opened the day with a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) win over 13th-seed Joey Lankelma of Coe before defeating Macalester’s Chris Fowler 6-2, 6-0. Jethwa recorded a first round win over Macalester’s Lewis Wilcox 6-1, 6-3 and advanced to the third round by a walkover. Jethwa pulled one of the big upsets of the day by defeating seventh-seed Max Busch of Luther 7-5, 6-1.
The Gusties were just as successful in doubles play as four duos advanced to the third round, including second-seed John Kauss and Mike Burdakin and third-seed David Koppel and Charlie Paukert.
