The Gustavus women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall season with a solid performance at the ITA Midwest Regional and the Fall Invitational, both of which were hosted at Gustavus this past weekend. Sophomore Sam Frank and first year Megan Gaard turned in the top performance with a second place finish in the ITA Doubles Tournament. Frank and Gaard lost to Molly Fiala and Andrea Schupach of Coe 8-4 in the championship match.
It was a good weekend for Frank and Gaard, a couple of young players looking to make their mark in the Gustavus tennis program. In doubles, the duo performed well despite only starting to play together when school started in early September. They opened the tournament by defeating Suzie Hallquist and Jenna Olson of St. Kate’s 8-0 in the first round and then knocked off Callie Conda and Linnae Wilke of St. Scholastica 8-0 in the second round. On Saturday, they defeated Ingrid Stensvaag and Michelle Daciolas of UW-Whitewater 8-6 in the quarterfinals and then topped Katy Delagardelle and Hannah Jensen of Coe 8-6 in the semifinals.
In other action during the weekend for Gustavus, Marianne Barau finished second in the singles draw of the Fall Invitational. Barau compiled a record of 5-1 on the weekend losing in the championship match to Cami Czech of Luther 7-5, 2-6, 0-1 (8-10).
In doubles play in the Fall Invitational, Barau teamed with Mary Roop to win the title. Barau and Roop compiled a mark of 5-0 including the championship match win over Kelly Kuether and Katie McDonald of UW-La Crosse 8-4.
