Men’s Swimming and Diving Team In 17th Place After First Day of NCAA Championships

The Gustavus men’s swimming team is in 17th place after the first day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships which are being held at The College of Wooster in Oxford, Ohio. Kenyon College of Gambier, Ohio is in first place with 201 points. The Gusties scored 23 points and trail 16th place Rochester Institute of Technology (26) by three points.

All of the Gustavus team points were earned one event, the 500 yard freestyle. Junior Matt Stewart (Burnsville, Minn.) turned in the top performance of the day as he finished third in the event for the second straight year with a time of 4:29.84. Teammates Ben Hanson (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Skylar Davis (Palatine, Ill.) finished 12th (4:32.07) and 15th (4:34.11), respectively. Stewart earned All-America honors by virtue of finishing in the top eight at the national meet, while Hanson and Davis earned honorable mention All-America.

The championships continue on Friday with prelims beginning at 10 am. The finals will begin at 5:30 pm.
