Fermoyle Wins Women’s Saint John’s Invitational, Team Takes Silver

Collegeville, Minn. – Sophomore Caitlin Fermoyle (Mendota Heights, Minn.) got off to a strong start in her 2012 campaign, finishing first in Saturday’s Saint John’s Invitational with a time of 23:24.  It was the first time a Gustavus woman has won a race of five teams or more since 2006 when Hailey Harren `07 won the River Falls Invitational on September 9.  The team also performed well as a unit on Saturday morning.  The Gustie women notched a second place finish with a total of 57 points.  The Gusties trailed only Saint Benedict, who won the event with 44 points.  Third place went to Concordia (63), fourth belonged to Macalester (89), and fifth was St. Cloud State (102).

“The women ran strong today,” said head coach Dale Bahr.  “We have more depth than we have had in the past, and that is going to pay dividends for us towards the end of the season.”

Joining Fermoyle in the top five, junior Rebecca Hare (Albany, Minn.) finished in 23:51 for fourth place.  It was only the second time that Hare has cracked the top five in her collegiate career.  In the top 15, Beth Hauer (Sr., Little Falls, Minn.) finished in 24:25 to place her 11th.  The second place finish Saturday morning bested last years efforts, where the Gusties finished third in the overall team standings.

The Gustavus women will travel to Northfield next weekend to participate in the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday.
