Northfield, Minn. – After laying in the weeds on the opening day of competition at the MIAC Decathlon, Gustavus Adolphus sophomore track and field athlete Matt Flotterud (Cannon Falls, Minn.) made his move with an outstanding performance on day two. Flotterud, who was in 12th place with 2,849 points after day one, tallied 2,756 points on day two to jump seven spots and finish in fifth place with a two-day score of 5,605.
Winning this season’s MIAC Heptathlon was St. Thomas’ Maxwell Dunne who earned 6,201 points. Dunne’s only finish outside the top-five came in the 1,500-meter run where he placed seventh. The Tommies swept the podium as Gavin Yseth placed second (6,151 pts.) and Patrick Ecklund took third (5,868 pts.).
Matt Flotterud took advantage on the hurdles to open up the day, taking second in the 110-meter with a time of 15.84. His other top-five mark came in the discus after he registered a toss of 110-feet 3-inches. In the pole vault, Flotterud placed eighth after clearing 11-feet 5.74-inches, and in the javelin, he finished sixth after a throw of 133-feet 5-inches. The rookie from Cannon Falls concluded the day with a 13th place mark in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 5:04.28.
The Gustavus Adolphus track and field team will next compete in the Meet of the UnSaintly, the squad’s final tune-up before the 2012 MIAC Championships, on Saturday and Sunday in St. Paul.
