The Gustavus men’s golf team concluded its 2012 spring campaign with a second place finish at the Saint John’s Spring Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Gusties sat in seventh place after day one with a score of 297 and then broke out in day two with a season-low round of 280 to finish with a total of 577 (+9). The 18-hole round of 280 was the lowest recorded by the men’s team since the Gustie Spring Classic in 2004 and the second lowest in program history.

St. Cloud State University won the 16-team event with a 287-286-573 (+5), while Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Manitoba tied for third with scores of 579 (+11). St. Cloud was led by Devin Holmes who won the invitational with a 66-69-135 (-7).

Gustavus posted two golfers in the top-five. Tyler McMorrow tied for second place after marking his card with a 73-66-139 (-3). McMorrow’s second round 66 was the lowest of his career. Logan Palmer of Nebraska Wesleyan and Josh Wytinch of Manitoba also finished with a -3. Gustavus’ other top-five finisher was Alex Kolquist, tallying a 72-69-141 (-1).

Rounding out the Gustie team were Simon Erlandsson in 22nd with a 77-70-147 (+5), Andrew Oakes in 40th with a 75-75-150 (+8) and Trevor Gervais in 51st with a 77-76-153 (+11).

Gustavus’ second team was led by senior Alex Flasch and sophomore Matt Jensen who each tallied a +3 for 16th place. Flasch’s 16th place finish was the best of his career after shooting a 73-72. Jensen shot a 74-71.

The Three Crowns will now wait for an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships, which will be held on May 15-18 in Howey in the Hills, Fla.
