Taylor Drenttel Named MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete Of The Week

St. Paul, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus women’s golfer Taylor Drenttel (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) has been named MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week for her outstanding play at the Wartburg Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa.  Drenttel put together one of her finest tournaments of the season in Waverly, taking the gold medal in a 37-player field with a 36-hole total 155 (+11).  The senior led the Gusties to a second place finish after recording a two-day team score of 647 (+71).

Taylor Drenttel kicked off the tournament by firing a four-over-par 76 in the opening round, leading the field after day one. Her first round total of 76 was her second-lowest round of the 2011-12 season.  Drenttel stayed the course on day two, shooting a seven-over-par 79 to bring her to a two-day total of 155 (+11).  She edged out Carleton’s Kelsey Moede who finished in second with a 157 (+13).  Drenttel is currently averaging 80.4 strokes per round, which ranks second on the team.

By earning gold this weekend, the senior captain now has two tournament victories on the season.  Drenttel won the Division 3 Classic earlier on Sept. 17-18, recording a season-low score of 153 (+9).  Her 155 at the Wartburg Invite this weekend is Drenttel’s second-best 36-hole total of the school year.  Of the six-team field at the Wartburg Invite, five were ranked in the top-25 in NCAA Division III.

Taylor Drenttel and the rest of the Gustavus women’s golf team will round out its spring regular season schedule at the Carleton Invitational next weekend, April 28-29 in Northfield, Minn.
