After the opening day of competition at the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships being held on March 21-24 in Indianapolis, Ind., the Gustavus women’s team has scored 12 points and currently sits in 14th place.
The top performance of the day came from the 200-medley relay team. Alissa Tinklenberg (Willmar, Minn.), Jennifer Strom (Rochester, Minn.), Steph Korba (Lakeville, Minn.), and Kelsey Lucia (St. Cloud, Minn.) teamed up to finish 11th in the race after touching the wall in 1:46.30. The Gusties improved their morning time from the preliminaries by .23 seconds. The 200-medley relay came into the NCAA Championships the 11th seed with a qualifying time of 1:45.92.
“Today was a good start for us, but tomorrow will be critical,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “Tomorrow will be an even better day for us; tomorrow we’ll have a better idea where we sit in the standings.”
Also participating in an individual event on the opening day was Katie Olson (North Oaks, Minn.). Olson swam in the 50 freestyle, finishing 24th with a time of 23.95.
The 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will continue tomorrow morning with the preliminary races of the men’s and women’s 200-free relays taking to the water first at 9:00 a.m.
