The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Monday evening that the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s and women’s tennis teams have been selected to host regional tournaments this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Both the men’s and women’s teams received byes in the first round of the tournament.
The women will host a six-team regional. The five teams joining the Gusties include Carthage College of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grinnell College of Grinnell, Iowa, the College of Saint Scholastica from Duluth, Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. In first round play on Friday, Grinnell will play UW-La Crosse and Coe will face St. Scholastica. On Saturday, in second round play, Gustavus will play the winner of the Coe/St. Scholastica match and Carthage will face the winner of the Grinnell/UW-La Crosse match. Saturday’s winners will play on Sunday for the right to advance to the NCAA Final Eight which will take place on May 15-17 at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The men will host a five-team regional. The four teams joining the Gusties include Carthage College, Grinnell College, Luther College of Decorah, Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. Luther will play Grinnell on Friday in the first round. Gustavus will play the winner of the Luther/Grinnell match and Carthage will face UW-Whitewater on Saturday in the second round. Saturday’s winners will play on Sunday for the right to advance to the NCAA Final Eight which will take place on May 15-17 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. Washington University of Saint Louis will serve as the host for the tournament.
The Gustavus men, who will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 25th time, will be making their 14th consecutive appearance. The Gustie men won the NCAA Championship in 1980 and 1982.
The Gustavus women will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 19th consecutive time dating back to their first ever appearance in 1989. The Gustie women won the national championship in 1990.
