The Gustavus softball team defeated Macalester 18-4 on Friday evening at Dunning Field in St. Paul. The game was the completion of the second game of a doubleheader that was suspended by rain last Sunday, April 22. The Gusties were trailing 4-3 in the top of the third when the game was re-started and then proceeded to score 11 times in the third to take a 14-4 lead. Gustavus would score four more times in the fourth inning and once in the fifth inning, while shutting the Scots out to make the final score 18-4.
In the 11-run third inning, the big hits were a bases loaded double by Tina Strauss that drove in three runs and a grand slam home run by Rachael Click. In the fourth inning, the Gusties scored four times as Andrea Brown, Click, Abby Bernstein, and Emily Klein all drove in single runs. Sarah Willis scored the Gusties final run as she sprinted home from third base on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. The game was stopped after five innings due to the MIAC’s eight-run mercy rule.
Callie Nelsen pitched the third and fourth innings and then Betsie Collins came in to pitch the fifth inning. Nelsen earned the pitching victory.
Rachael Click, Andrea Brown, Emily Klein, and Tina Strauss all recorded two hits to lead Gustavus. Click drove in five runs.
The Gusties will host St. Ben’s in a key MIAC late regular season matchup on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. It will be senior day for the Gusties and 2007 seniors Joyce DeWitz, Abby Bernstein, and Tina Strauss will be honored prior to the game.
