Women’s Hockey Remains Unbeaten, Completes Sweep Over St. Thomas 3-2

First-year forward Carolyn Draayer scored two goals in Saturday's win over St. Thomas and leads the MIAC with nine goals.

First-year forward Carolyn Draayer continued her goal-scoring tear Saturday afternoon in Mendota Heights, Minn. with her third two-goal performance of the season, leading the Gustavus women’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over St. Thomas. The win gives the Gusties four points in the conference standings for the weekend as well as the sweep over the Tommies. The Three Crowns finished their first month of play perfect at 6-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC, while the Toms fall to 1-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.

Draayer extended her goal-scoring streak to six games at the 6:16 mark in the first period on an assist from fellow first-year Marissa Brandt. The Gusties carried their one-goal lead into the second, but the Tommies got a little payback from Friday night’s short-handed goal by Amanda Cartony on a short-handed score of their own by Christina Rozeske to even the game at one apiece 1:12 into the second.

The Gusties jumped back out in front on a power play goal by Kelly Thotland in the ninth minute of the second – her second of the season. With 3:39 remaining in the period, Draayer netted her second goal of the afternoon, which was also her MIAC-leading ninth of the season.

Paige Baldwin scored her first goal of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the contest for St. Thomas, but the Gusties were able to hold off the Tommies for the 3-2 victory.

Danielle Justice tallied 15 saves in her fourth win of the season in goal for the Gusties, while Alise Riedel dropped her second-straight game in the nets for the Tommies after making 34 saves.

The Gusties have next weekend off and will continue MIAC action the first weekend of December against Augsburg. Gustavus will travel to Minneapolis on Friday, Dec. 2 for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff and will complete the regular season series in St. Peter on Saturday, Dec. 3 with the game beginning at 2:00 p.m.
