The Gustavus women’s hockey team closed out its regular season with a 5-1 victory over St. Kate’s on Don Roberts Ice Rink. Jessica Doig (So., New Prague, Minn.) and Kelly Crandall (Sr., Plymouth, Minn/Robbinsdale Armstrong) each recorded two goals for Gustavus. The Gusties end the regular season with a 23-2 overall record and a 17-1 mark in the MIAC. The Wildcats close out their season at 0-22-2 overall and 0-16-2 in the conference.

Gustavus got off to a quick start to the game when Doig skated into the slot and slapped a hard shot through St. Kate’s goaltender Jessi McGehee’s legs just :41 seconds into the first period. The Gusties grabbed a 2-0 lead at the 9:38 mark when Melissa Mackley (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) dropped the puck back for Kelly Crandall who slid it past McGehee. The Wildcats answered back at the 11:30 mark as Kaytlyn Mount wrapped the puck around the net and caught Gusties goaltender Kitty Hurley (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./The Blake School) out of position to cut the Gustavus lead to 2-1 after a period.

The Gusties recorded two goals in the second period to take a three-goal lead. At the 1:59 mark, Crandall stuffed the puck past McGehee after Liz Haakenson’s (So., Moorhead, Minn.) initial shot on goal failed to find the back of the net. With 6:00 to play in the period, Doig posted her second goal of the game by deflecting an Andrea Peterson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) shot over the glove of McGehee to give the Gusties a 4-1 lead.

Gustavus added to its lead at the 4:07 mark of the third period when Molly Doyle (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) tipped a Margaret Dorer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Anthony) shot into the net. As time expired the final score was Gustavus, 5 and St. Kate’s, 1.

Kitty Hurley started the game in goal for the Gusties and recorded four saves in less than 23 minutes of play for the victory. Beanna Scavo (Fy., Blaine, Minn./North St. Paul) played over 21 minutes and did not record a save, while Amanda Rosequist (So., Edina, Minn./Edina) played 16 minutes and posted one save. McGehee recorded 34 saves for St. Kates in the losing effort.

Andrea Peterson moved into first place all-time on the MIAC career-scoring list with 183 points on 77 goals and 106 assists. Peterson broke the mark of 181 career points held by Sarah Moe (Gustavus/Augsburg: 1999-2002).
