The Gustavus men’s hockey team remained undefeated in MIAC play with a 3-0 win over Saint John’s in St. Cloud on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties improve to 6-5-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAC, while Saint John’s, which entered the series ranked #9 in Division III, falls to 6-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the MIAC.
The Gusties took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Tom Awaijane at the 18:32 mark. Gustavus held a slim 13-11 shot advantage in the period.
Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Joe Ulwelling at 5:07 of the second period. Much of the middle period was played around center ice with neither team being able to put together much of an attack. The Gusties outshot the Johnnies 8-3.
The Johnnies picked up the pace in the third period as they outshot the Gusties 15-5, but Gustavus goaltender Dan Melde kept the puck out of the net to preserve the shutout. The third Gustavus goal was scored early in the period by Kyle Menken at the 3:00 minute mark.
Melde picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus,while Adam Hanna suffered the loss for the Johnnies.
The two teams finish up the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm at Don Roberts Rink in St. Peter.
