Volleyball Picks Up 3-0 Road Win Over Carleton

Malea Noennig distributed a match-high 33 digs in Gustavus' 3-0 win over Carleton on Wednesday night.

The Gustavus volleyball team moved a game ahead of .500 in conference play with a 3-0 win over Carleton in Northfield, Minn. on Wednesday night.  Gustavus’ Angela Ahrendt was the only hitter to finish with double-digit kills, recording a game high 10 for a hitting percentage of .400.  Gustavus improves to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC with the win, while Carleton falls to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC.

The Gusties did an outstanding job shutting down the Carleton offense throughout the game.  The Gusties limited the Knights to 26 kills and a team attack percentage of .030.

Down 16-12 in the first set, Gustavus used a 5-1 run to tie the set at 17-17.  The Gusties would go on to outscore the Knights 8-3 to take the first set 25-20.

After trading points early in the second set, Gustavus’ Paige Breneman served five straight points to give Gustavus a 17-12 advantage.  The Gusties would hold the advantage for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Gustavus took control in the third set with the score tied 10-10, rattling off five straight points to gain a 15-10 advantage.  Angela Ahrendt hit the floor with three kills in the final five points of the match to give the Gusties a 3-0 sweep after winning the set 25-16.

The Gusties combined for 39 kills and an attack percentage of .278 in the match.  Jessica Grill and Emily Phillips joined Ahrendt at the top of the kill chart with nine each.

Olivia Warren and Paige Breneman each recorded a match-high 13 points, while Malea Noennig shelled out a match-high 33 assists.

The Gustavus volleyball team will look to pick up its second straight road win on Friday night in St. Paul when the Gusties take on Macalester College at 7:00 p.m.
