Gymnastics Takes Fourth at UW-Eau Claire Invitational

The Gustavus Adolphus gymnastics team competed on the road for the first time this season, taking fourth place in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational Friday night in Eau Claire, Wis. Defending national champion UW-La Crosse took the title with a score of 181.900, while Hamline edged the host Blugolds 175.750-174.000 for second. The Gusties posted a score of 170.775 led by Christine Askham’s 9.500 on the floor exercise.

The Gusties team score of 170.775 included individual event totals of 43.625 on the vault, 40.600 on the uneven bars, 41.775 on the balance beam, and 44.775 on the floor exercise.

Opening on the balance beam, Gustavus was led by Nicole Gergen, who tied for fourth place on the event with a score of 9.100. Dana Ryerson finished 14th with a score of 8.45, one spot of Emily Pickford, who logged an 8.400. Laura Hansen was tied for 18th at 8.250, Laurel Urquhart was 23rd at 7.575, and Kelsie Droogsma was 24th with a 7.250.

Behind Askham’s second-place 9.500, the Gusties scored a season-best 44.775 on the floor exercise. Gergen continue to perform well, posting a tenth-place score of 9.025 on the apparatus. Droogsma was next with a 8.925, followed by Stephanie Lovik (8.675), Brittany Moore (8.650), and Ryerson (8.300).

Brittany Moore finished sixth on the vault with a team-high score of 9.125. Others posting a score on the vault included Emily Pickford (8.850), Christina Sorenson (8.750), Askham (8.625), Kathleen Ozbun (8.275) and Aryn Bell (8.000).

The Gusties finished on the uneven bars, where they were led by Laura Hansen’s eighth-place score of 8.550. Askham finished tied for 11th with a score of 8.450, followed by Ozbun in 15th with an 8.300, Urquhart in 19th with a 7.850, Audrey Schenewerk in a tie for 20th with a 7.450 and Pickford in 24th with a 7.150.

Gustavus returns to competition on Friday, Jan. 19 when they host UW-La Crosse in a dual in the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio in St. Peter.
