Gustavus Adolphus senior track and field athlete Janey Helland (Mapleton, Minn.) currently sits in sixth place in the heptathlon competion of the Drake Relays after registering 2,679 points in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter dash segments on the first day. Brianna LeRoy of the University of Utah leads the pack with 3,116 points, while Whitney Carlson of North Dakota State University (3,109) and Maddy Outman, an unattached competitor, sit in second and third place, respectively. The 102nd Drake Relays are being held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Helland’s top performance of the day came in the shot put where she recorded a throw of 32-feet 11-inches, good enough for second place. Her other top-three finish came in the high jump, as she cleared 5-feet 3-inches to finish in third. Helland also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.79, and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.26 to round out the day.
Helland is the only member of the Gustavus women’s track and field team competing at the Drake Relays. The heptathlon will pick back up tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. with the long jump, triple jump and 800-meter run portions of the competition.
