Women’s Basketball Slips Past Concordia 62-58

The Gustavus women’s basketball team improved its overall record to 3-0 with a hard-fought 62-58 win over Concordia College at Gus Young Court in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon. Gustie guard Angie Peterson led all scorers with 17 points.

The Gustavus women’s basketball team improved its overall record to 3-0 with a hard-fought 62-58 win over Concordia College at Gus Young Court in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties pulled it out in the final minutes as they outscored the Cobbers 6-2 in the final 1:43 to remain undefeated in the season. The key play turned out to be a three-point basket by senior guard Angie Peterson that gave Gustavus a 59-56 lead with 1:21 left in regulation play. The Gusties were led by Angie Peterson with 17 points, while Concordia was led by Mandy Pearson with 10. Gustavus improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC, while Concordia falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.

The first half was very evenly played, however Gustavus held the lead from the opening tap. The Gusties led by as many as nine points at 20-11 with 7:30 left in the half. The Cobbers outscored Gustavus 6-0 in the final two minutes to pull within one at 28-27 at the intermission.

Concordia came out fired up in the second half and outscored Gustavus 9-0 in the first five minutes to take a 36-28 lead. The Gusties used an 8-0 run midway through the half to tie the game at 43-43 with 8:58 left to play. The game was tied five different times down the stretch. The last tie was 56-56 with 1:43 left to play.

Gustavus placed two players in double figures including Peterson with 17 and Jennifer Klohs with 14. Gustavus shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-54), while Concordia 35.1 percent (20-57). The Cobbers outrebounded the Gusties 46-30, however Gustavus forced Concordia into committing 27 turnovers.
