The Gustavus Adolphus women’s golf team saw a nine-stroke 36-hole advantage evaporate Sunday as host Winona State posted a 307 to Gustavus’ 326 over the final 18 holes of the Best Western Riverport Classic in Winona. The Gusties finished with a 54-hole total of 977, 10 shots behind the Warriors. St. Thomas was third at 995, followed by Saint Mary’s at 1071.

Saturday’s 36-hole co-leaders went in opposite directions Sunday. Winona State’s Morgan Proshek fired the low round of the tournament with a 73 to take medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 231, while Gustavus’ Kimbra Kosak (Grand Rapids, Minn.) struggled to an 86 after opening with rounds of 81 and 77. Kosak finished alone in fifth place at 244.

First-year Kali Griggs (Burnsville, Minn.) was the highest place Gustie. After firing an opening round 79, Griggs posted back-to-back 81s to finish second with a 241 total, ten shots behind Proshek.

Senior Breanne Staples (Windom, Minn.) rebounded from a second-round 89 to post a 77 on Sunday, helping her to a sixth-place finish at 245. Rachel Roberg (So., Rice Lake, Wis.) finished 11th after posting scores of 89-82-82 for a 253 total, while Lauren Runsvold (So., Fargo, N.D.) finished 16th with an 89-83-90–262 total. Amanda Johnson (Fy., Bemidji, Minn.), playing as an individual, finished 26th with a 92-94-89–275 total.

Gustavus, which finished ahead of the University of St. Thomas for the fourth time in five tournaments this fall, will participate in the 2006 MIAC Women’s Golf Championships Oct. 7-9 at Bunker Hills G.C. in Coon Rapids. The Gusties will be looking for their first league championship in women’s golf.
