Women’s Hockey Defeats St. Ben’s 8-1, Carroll Picks Up 250th Career Victory

Gustavus returned to MIAC play with a convincing 8-1 win over St. Ben’s in St. Cloud. The Gusties led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two periods before exploding for five goals in the third period on their way to the impressive victory.

Mike Carroll became only the second coach in Div. III women’s hockey to compile 250 career wins.

Gustavus returned to MIAC play with a convincing 8-1 win over St. Ben’s in St. Cloud. The Gusties led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two periods before exploding for five goals in the third period on their way to the impressive victory.

It was an historic night for Gustavus as Head Coach Mike Carroll picked up his 250th career win and two players registered their first collegiate goals including sophomore Jenna Christensen and first year Maddie Bergh. Carroll becomes only the second coach in the history of Division III women’s hockey to compile 250 career victories. In his 11th season at Gustavus, Carroll has a career mark of 250-61-18. Bill Mandigo of Middlebury College ranks first all-time with 415.

Christensen opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first period. Lindsey Hjelm and Allie Schwab added second period goals to push the lead to 3-0. St. Ben’s opened the third period with a goal by Holly Reinking to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Gusties put the game away with three goals in the next four minutes to take a 6-1 lead. Schwab scored her second goal of the game at the 6:01 mark, and then Sara Yungner followed with a goal at the 8:59 mark and Hjelm tallied her second goal of the night at the 9:32 mark. Gustavus closed out the scoring barrage with goals by Maddie Bergh at the 11:09 mark and Christensen (her second of the game) at 18:52.

The Gusties scored a season high four power play goals in the contest including three in the third period. Danielle Justice started the game in goal for Gustavus and picked up the victory. Marah Sobczak played the third period in goal for the Gusties.

Gustavus improves to 9-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the MIAC, while St. Ben’s falls to 2-9-3 overall and 1-5-3 in conference play.  The two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm at Gustavus.
