Women’s Tennis Posts 9-0 Victories at St. Kate’s and Hamline

The Gustavus women’s tennis team improved to 23-4 overall and 9-0 in the MIAC with 9-0 wins over the College of St. Catherine and Hamline University Sunday in St. Paul. Tara Houlihan, Lyndsey Palen, Darcy Haubrick and Hannah Frericks each captured two singles victories and two doubles victories for the Gusties. Gustavus will face St. Olaf Monday before hosting the MIAC Women’s Tennis Championships Friday and Saturday.

The Gusties opened the dual by not dropping a game en route to sweeping all three doubles matches. Tara Houlihan (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Lyndsey Palen (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) (No. 1), Jenni White (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Darcy Haubrick (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) (No. 2) and Alex Burleigh (So., Verona, Wis.) and Hannah Frericks (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) (No.3) each won by 8-0 scores.

Houlihan, Palen, Haubrick, Frericks and Burleigh each added straight set singles wins, while Lauren Hom (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) replaced White in the singles line-up and picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Susan Hallquist at No. 3 singles.

Gustavus continued its winning ways in an afternoon dual at Hamline, again sweeping the doubles matches. Houlihan and Palen defeated Kristen Bothun and Kelly Gust at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, while White and Haubrick defeated Dre Eilertson and Liz Gunderson 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Frericks and Burleigh capped off doubles action with a 8-0 win over Trina Ellis and Stephanie England at No. 3 doubles.

Houlihan, Palen, Hom, Haubrick and Frericks again added straight set singles wins. Jenny Arnfelt (So., Arden Hills, Minn.) entered the singles line-up against the Pipers and picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over England at No. 6 singles.

St. Kate’s dropped to 6-11, 3-6 in the MIAC, while Hamline falls to 8-10 overall, 5-5 in the MIAC. Gustavus will wrap up its dual season Monday afternoon when it faces St. Olaf in a MIAC dual. The Gusties will host the MIAC Women’s Tennis Championships Friday-Saturday, April 28-29.
