The Gustavus softball team continued its winning ways by sweeping Hamline 10-0 and 6-1 in St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon. Junior catcher Abby Bernstein had the hot bat for the Gusties as she went 5-for-7 with 4 rbi in the doubleheader. Gustavus extended its win streak to 11 games and improved its overall record to 17-5.
In game one, the Gusties scored one run in the first inning, four in the second, and one in the third to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Julie Mahre’s two-run home run keyed the four run second inning. Gustavus closed out the 10-0 win with four runs in top of the fifth inning. The Gusties needed only two hits as the Pipers contributed four errors in the innning. Joyce DeWitz earned the win on the mound for Gustavus as she allowed only two hits in four innings of work. Sarah Manke came in to put the Pipers down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In game two, the Gusties were tied 1-1 entering the seventh inning and then exploded for five runs to claim the 6-1 win. Gustavus opened the seventh with hits by Whitney Bartolo and Julie Mahre and then Mary Furlong reached on an error that allowed Allison Haase (pinch running for Bartolo) to score giving the Gusties a 2-1 lead. The Pipers struggled in the field and three errors allowed Gustavus to score three more runs. Abby Bernstein led the Gusties with three hits in four at-bats. Joyce DeWitz was dominant on the mound again for Gustavus as she limited the Pipers to five hits and one earned run in seven innings. She also struck out nine, while walking four.
The Gusties will now face Saint Mary’s in a key MIAC doubleheader in Winona on Thursday at 4 pm.
