The Gustavus men’s soccer team reported to campus on Sunday, August 22 to begin preparations for the 2010 season. Head Coach Mike Middleton begins his first season leading the men’s squad after replacing long-time coach Larry Zelenz. The Gusties open regular season play on Saturday, September 4 with a contest against Northland College in Duluth, Minn. The game will be played on the campus of St. Scholastica beginning at 2:30 p.m.
“It’s great to be back on the pitch,” Middleton stated. “The lads are working hard.”
Middleton will look to build his squad around 11 returning letterwinners including All-Conference junior forward Mark Adams. Other returning letterwinners include, senior midfielder Ben Ikeda, senior defender Dan Jarrett, senior goalkeepers Steven Lundberg and Luke Strom, junior defenders Jon Carpentier, Ben Ceder and Justin Eglseder, junior midfielders Doug Frey and Kyle Sadler and sophomore defender Lucas Thompson.
The Gusties posted a record of 9-6-3 overall and finished in fifth place in the MIAC last year with a league mark of 6-3-1.
