Softball Team Wraps Up Regular Season With Sweep of St. Scholastica

The Gustavus softball team wrapped up a successful regular season with a sweep of St. Scholastica at the Jane Sage Cowles Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus. The Gusties won game behind the two-hit pitching of Callie Nelsen and then claimed game two 11-2 thanks to a six-run fourth inning.

The Gustavus softball team wrapped up a successful regular season with a sweep of St. Scholastica at the Jane Sage Cowles Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.  The Gusties won game one behind the two-hit pitching of Callie Nelsen and then claimed game two 11-2 thanks to a six-run fourth inning. The Gusties, who are now 28-11 overall, will play Bethel in the first round of the MIAC Tournament on Friday at 3:00 pm at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

In game one, Gustavus took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a leadoff home run by Jenna Johnson.  The Gusties then broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning.  Emily Wendorff’s two-out double drove in two runs to key the big fourth inning for Gustavus.  Jenny Ewert, Jenna Johnson, and Emily Wendorff each picked up two hits for the Gusties.  Callie Nelsen improved to 10-2 on the season as she limited the Saints to two hits and no runs in seven innings.

In game two, Gustavus scored two runs in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth on its way to a convincing 11-2 win in five innings.  Dani Cattrysse and Sheila Arnold each drove in runs in the second, while Andrea Brown doubled to drive in two runs and MacKenzie Dalton singled in the third run.  In the sixth inning, the Gusties scored their six runs on three hits and three St. Scholastica errors.  Emily Wendorff’s double that drove in three runs was the big hit in the inning.  Betsie Collins was the winning pitcher for Gustavus.  Collins allowed two hits and two runs, while striking out five and walking three in four innings.  Kate Rentschler pitched the final inning allowing one hit and no runs.

Gustavus ends the regular season with a record of 28-11 overall and 18-4 in the MIAC.
