Softball Splits Doubleheader With Augsburg, Drops To Second Place in League Standings

The Gustavus softball team played two nailbiters with Augsburg on Tuesday afternoon and the Gusties managed to win game one 3-2 in nine innings, but the Auggies scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win game two 4-3. Gustavus is now 19-7 overall and 12-2 in league play.

Dani Cattrysse drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning in game one.

The Gustavus softball team played two nailbiters with Augsburg on Tuesday afternoon and the Gusties managed to win game one 3-2 in nine innings, but the Auggies scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win game two 4-3.  Gustavus is now 19-7 overall and 12-2 in league play.

In the first game, the Gusties scored once in the first, once the fifth and once in ninth to edge the Auggies 3-2.  With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth inning, Dani Cattrysse stroked a clutch two-out single to right field that scored Jen Ulmen from third base with what turned out to be the gamewinner.  Betsie Collins pitched all nine innings for the Gusties scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs, while striking out 13.

In the second game, the Gusties led 3-1 through five innings, but Augsburg scored once in the bottom of the sixth and twice in the bottom of the seventh to escape with a 4-3 victory.  Callie Nelsen pitched six and two-thirds innings for Gustavus.  She allowed four earned runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking four.  Emily Wendorff was the hitting star for Gustavus as she went 3-for-3 with one run scored and 2 RBI, while Lisa Klass was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Gustavus will travel to Winona to face Saint Mary’s on Thursday at 4 p.m.
