Two members of the Gustavus softball team earned MIAC Softball Athletes of the Week honors yesterday. Sophomore second baseman Lisa Klass earned player of the week honors while senior pitcher Betsie Collins was awarded pitcher of the week.
Klass, a Richfield, Minn. native, went 7-14 to help the Gusties sweep Bethel (10-4, 3-1) and then sweep #20 UW-La Crosse (2-0, 5-2). As the Gusties lead-off hitter, Klass went 5-7 in the two games against Bethel and scored four runs. Against UW-La Crosse, Klass went 2-7 with the game-winning RBI in the Gusties 5-2 victory in game 2. In the field, Klass compiled a 1.000 fielding percentage with 14 chances including five putouts and nine assists. The sophomore second baseman is currently hitting .400 on the season (18-45) with a .978 fielding percentage.
Collins, a Waseca, Minn. native, went undefeated in her two appearances against Bethel and UW-La Crosse. Collins pitched a complete game as the Gusties opened conference play with a 10-4 victory over Bethel in Arden Hills, Minn. on Wednesday. She allowed 11 hits, four earned runs, while striking out 10 and walking one batter. Against the 20th ranked Eagles of UW-La Crosse, the senior pitcher allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out five in seven innings of work, claiming the 5-2 victory.
