Led by a pair of goals each by defensemen Jon Keseley (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Keith Detlefsen (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), the Gustavus men’s hockey team picked up its first MIAC victory and moved its record to 4-2-0 with a 7-0 win over Concordia College on Friday night. The Cobbers drop to 5-4-0 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC with the loss.

The Gusties netted their first goal of the evening just 6:10 into the first period. On the power play thanks to a Cobber hooking penalty, junior forward John Arundel (Eden Prairie, Minn.) placed the puck past Concordia goalie Mike Dowers to give Gustavus a 1-0 lead. Detlefsen and junior Mike Hosfield (Golden Valley, Minn.) were credited with assists on the play.

Keseley found the net with just 1:44 remaining in the period to give Gustavus a 2-0 lead heading to the first intermission. Hosfield and Arundel assisted on the goal.

Forwards Steve Dusich (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sami Idris (So., Gothenburg, SWE) added a pair of goals in quick succession early in the second period. Dusich scored first, 5:31 into the second period, off assists from Arundel and Hosfield. Idris, who had been shaken up in the first period, rebounded to score just 1:14 later. Detlefsen and sophomore Ian Wolff (Minnetonka, Minn.) assisted on the Idris tally, which made Gustavus a 4-0 lead.

The Gustavus special teams would get a work out in the second period with ten penalties between the schools. Keseley notched his second goal of the game with 3:03 remaining in the period, scoring on a shot taken from the blue line. Dusich and Detlefsen assisted on the power play goal.

After already assisting on three goals during the evening, Keith Detlefsen finally found the net with 1:33 remaning on the second period, scoring a short-handed goal on a breakaway opportunity. Wolff and forward Ben Ollila (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) were credited with assists on the play, Detlefsen’s second short-handed goal of the season.

The Gusties capped the scoring with another goal by Detlefsen midway through the third period to take a 7-0 lead.

Senior Erik Kraska (Plymouth, Minn.) picked up the win in net for Gustavus, recording 32 saves to move his record to 3-1-0 on the season. Detlefsen finished the night with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. Arundel (one goal, two assists) and Hosfield (three assists) each picked up three points. Keseley (two goals), Dusich (one goal, one assist) and Wolff (two assists) each recorded two points to round out the multiple-point scorers for the Gusties.

Mike Dowers recorded 30 saves in the loss for Concordia.

The two teams will lace up the skates again and hit the ice on Saturday for a 2:05 face-off at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
