The 2010 Gustavus baseball team opened the season in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome with a series split with UW-Oshkosh on Sunday evening.  The Gusties dropped game one to the Titans 10-9 in extra innings, but came back to win the second game of the doubleheader 2-1.  Gustavus is now 1-1 on the season, while UW-Oshkosh moves to 3-3.

Gustavus got out to a 3-0 lead in game one, as Willy Hanson scored on a passed ball and Cody Sukalski was drove in by Alan Woitas in the third inning.  UW-Oshkosh answered with two runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one in the fifth, to take a 6-4 lead after four innings complete.  Tory Herman pitched three innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.

Gustavus took back the lead in the sixth inning, as the Gusties scored five runs on five hits, giving them a 9-6 edge.  Andrew Woitas got the inning started with a double down the line and Brandon Boyd drove him in with a single.  Tim Miller had a two RBI double later in the inning, as Herman drove in the last run of the inning on a single to left field.

UW-Oshkosh battled back to tie the game at 9-9 in the seventh inning.  Oshkosh scored two runs on two hits in the inning, as Andrew Woitas and Miller were not able to hold the lead.  Andrew Woitas threw two innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, while Miller threw three and two thirds innings, giving up four hits and four runs.  The Titans scored on an RBI double by Nolan Fadnes in the ninth, scoring Derek Hirosk for the win.

Game two turned out to be a low scoring affair, as UW-Oshkosh scored just one run on six hits, while Gustavus scored two runs on four hits.  Alan Woitas pitched six innings, giving up five hits and one run.   Both Gustavus runs came in the second inning, as Herman led off the inning with a double to the right-center gap.  The next batter, Andrew Woitas, also doubled to the gap, scoring Herman and giving Gustavus the early 1-0 lead.  Woitas later scored on an error assessed to Titan first basemen Kyle Kannenb, which gave the Gusties a 2-0 advantage.

UW-Oshkosh got on the board in the sixth inning with a run scored by Nolan Fadnes on a sacrifice fly to left field by Andrew Eichs.  Sukalski pitched the seventh inning, facing four batters and picking up the save.

The Gusties will head back to the Metrodome on Monday, March 22, for a doubleheader with Loras College beginning at 2:00pm.
