Janey Helland won the long jump and placed third in the high jump after Day 1 at the 2010 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

After the first day of competition at the 2010 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Gustavus women’s indoor track and field team sits in first place with 89 points.  A fast start in the pentathlon, followed by a solid showing in the field events has put the Gusties one point ahead of second place, St. Thomas (88 points).  Bethel is in a distant third place with 41 points.  The event is taking place in Carleton’s Recreation Center in Northfield, Minn.

Gustavus totaled eight top five finishes and three event wins after day one, as Kaelene Lundstrum, Janey Helland, and Diana Scott were all event winners on the day.  Lundstrum took first in the high jump clearing 5’ 6”.  Her mark of 5’ 6” is a new Ties Recreation Center record, meet record, and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships.  Janey Helland won the long jump with a leap of 18’ 1.75”, which is also an NCAA provisional mark.  Diana Scott won the weight throw with a toss of 52’ 1.75” to become the two-time MIAC Champion in the event.

Kaelene Lundstrum took 1st in the high jump, 4th in the 55 m hurdles, and 6th in the long jump

Lundstrum also added a fourth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.86), and a sixth place finish in the long jump (16’ 8.75”).  Helland placed third in the high jump, clearing 5’ 2.50”, while Sarah Baker took third in the long jump with a lead of 16’ 11.50”.  Ann Bauer rounded out the field events finishing runner-up to Scott in the weight throw with a throw of 51’ 2.75”.

In the track events, Abby Karl turned in the top Gustavus finish of the day.  Karl placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.79.  Megan Lundgren finished eighth in the 800-meter run (2:24.88), while Beth Hauer placed 10th in the 5000 meter run (18:5.50).

The 2010 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, March 6.  Events will begin at 12:00pm starting with the women’s triple jump, and men’s high jump and shot put.
