The Gustavus women’s golf team finished third out of 11 teams at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview which was played at the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Golf Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida (Orlando area). Gustavus posted a 36-hole team total of 369-343–711. Methodist College won the tournament with a score of 333-312–645.
The NCAA Fall Preview was an invitation only tournament that involved 11 of the Top 20 teams in NCAA Division III women’s golf. Oglethorpe University hosted the tournament which was played on the same course where the NCAA Division III Championships will be played this next spring. Gustavus is currently rated third in the National Golf Coaches Association Division III poll.
The Gusties were led by Breanne Staples (Jr., Windom, Minn.), who finished fifth with a total of 84-86–170. Staples played as an individual in the tournament and did not figure in the team score. In the team total, Gustavus was led by Kelli Groff (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) with a score of 88-85–173. Other scores included Rachel Roberg (So., Rice Lake, Wisc.) at 91-88–179, Alana Reetz (Sr., Milaca, Minn.) at 96-84–180, Kimbra Kosak (Fy., Grand Rapids, Minn.) at 93-88–181, and Erin Schliep (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) at 96-88–184.
Gustavus’ final round team total of 343 was the third lowest 18-hole team total at the two-day tournament. The NCAA Fall Preview Tournament is the final competition of the fall season for the Gusties. Coach Scott Moe’s squad will resume practice in February.
