Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats St. John’s and Luther in Gustavus Triangular

IMG_9986The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team got back on the winning track with a victory over St. John’s and Luther College Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.  Gustavus took first with 1333.5 points, as St. John’s came in second with 869.5 points, while Luther came in third with 721 points.  Skylar and Whitaker Davis had stand out performances in the meet, combining to win four events while taking second in another five events.  Skylar won the 200 (1:46.95) and 500 freestyle (4:53.91), the 400 IM (4:18.89), and placed second in the 200 IM (2:04.28).  Whitaker won the 1000 freestyle (9:57.15), and placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:03.41), 100 freestyle (49.00) and 500 freestyle (4:56.33).

Other first place finishers included Paul Kirihara and Matt Van Fossen.  Kirihara won the 100 backstroke (54.56), and Van Fossen won the 100 butterfly (53.68).  William Schultze also contributed valuable points as he finished second in both the 100 (1:02.27) and 200 breaststroke (2:13.57), and third in the 200 freestyle.

Gustavus also achieved points through the third place finishes of Zach Nachtsheim, Peter Roth, Thomas Johnson, and John Rice.  Nachtsheim in the 200 backstroke, Roth in the 100 freestyle, Johnson in the 50 freestyle, and Rice in the 500 freestyle.  Bill Klein was the top Gustavus diver finishing second in the one meter diving (196.45) and third in the three meter diving.

The Gustavus relay teams ended the day with two seconds and one third place finish.  The team of Schultze, Van Fossen, Roth, and Sam DeFranco took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.52), as Schultze, Whitaker and Skylar Davis, and Ben Stewart teamed up to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.66).  The 200 medley relay team of Kirihara, Van Fossen, David Kramer, and Ben Stewart finished in third.
