Gustavus Places 12th at National Championships

The Gustavus men’s track and field team placed 12th at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Canton, New York.

(Canton, New York, May 24, 2003) – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s track and field team placed 12th at the three-day NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Canton, New York.

Gustie seniors Luke Speltz and Jerry Washington earned points for Gustavus on Saturday, which was the last day of competition.

Speltz earned All-America honors in a third event in three days by placing fifth in the men’s shot put. His best toss of the day was 54-3 3/4. Cody Brotherton from McMurray University won the event with a mark of 58-6 1/2. Speltz had earned All-America honors earlier in the weekend in the discus and hammer throws.

Washington placed seventh in the men’s 100 meter dash with a time of 11.00. This is the third consecutive year that Washington has placed in the top eight in the 100 meter dash at the national championships. Lincoln University’s Chad Clemons won the race with a time of 10.71.

The men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team consisting of Adam Cordes, Jack Henkemeyer, Stephen Handler, and Washington posted a time of 42.06 in the preliminaries but failed to qualify for the finals.

Gustavus, which placed fourth at the national indoor meet in March, finished in 12th place with 16.5 points. UW-La Crosse won the meet for the third consecutive year with 88 points, 24 points in front of second place Lincoln University.
