Men’s Golf Coach Scott Moe Helps U.S. Junior National Team to Toyota World Junior Cup Title

Gustavus men’s golf coach Scott Moe directed the U.S. Junior National Team to its second consecutive Toyota World Junior Cup title in Toyota City, Japan. The U.S. team claimed first place by 12 shots over second place Colombia. The Americans posted a 72-hole total of 824 which was 40 shots under par.

The U.S. team was lead by Erik Flores, who finished first individually with a total of 268 (-20). Flores was followed by Matthew Swan, who placed eighth with a total of 277 (-9), Michael Green, who placed tenth with a total of 278 (-8), and Nick Smith, who compiled a total of 290 (+2). Erik Flores broke the course record twice during the tourament with a seven-under 65 on the first day, followed by an eight-under 64 on the third day. He also broke the tournament record for lowest individual total at 20-under par. The previous mark was set last year at 15-under par. The U.S. team also broke the low team total at 40-under par. The previous mark was 25-under par set last year by the U.S. team.

Coach Moe commented on how it felt for his team to claim the title. “As repeating champions, it wasn’t a very good feeling having to give that trophy back at the opening ceremony. These guys really wanted to get it back and that’s exactly what they did.”

Moe added, “It was a treat to be a part of the this tournament, and to represent the United States. I learned a lot about how good the best of the best can play.”

U.S. Junior Team spokesman Cal Smith commented on Moe’s contribution, “Of course, most of the credit goes to the team for performing so well, but one can’t go without noticing the effort of Coach Scott Moe. He really played a large part in helping the guys gel together and really play as a team. He kept the mood light, even at tense moments and helped the guys in every way he could
