The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis program advanced two doubles teams to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship being played at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Gusties #1 team of Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen defeated Jenna Mezin and Hali Walther of Wellesley 6-1, 7-6 (6) and the #2 team of Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley defeated Jamie Chan and Carina Alberelli of Emory 6-4, 6-3. Tomorrow (Sun., May 22), Houlihan and Palen will play Jackie Ross and Claire Smyser of Middlebury (Vt.), while Hom and Smiley will face the #2 seeded duo of Kelly Mikkila and Elizca Buys of Carthage. The winners will advance to the national semifinals on Monday, May 23.
In singles play, sophomore Lauren Hom won her first round match against Abby Lerner of Brandeis 6-0, 6-1, but then Hom lost to #2 seed Liz Bondi of DePauw (Ind.) 6-1, 6-0 in her second round match. Junior Tara Houlihan lost her first round match to #1 seed Lindsay Hagerman of Washington and Lee (Va.) 6-2, 6-3.
The singles tournament will continue with quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Sunday and the finals on Monday, while the doubles tournament will play the quarterfinal round on Sunday and the semifnal and final round on Monday.
