The Gustavus doubles team of Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men’s doubles tournament being played in Santa Cruz, California. Morgan and Morse-Karzen defeated Ari Beilin and Alex Scott of Middlebury 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the opening round on Saturday afternoon. Morgan and Morse-Karzen will now play in the quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon against an opponent to be determined.
In the singles championship, Gustavus senior Ben Lundell won his first round match against Ari Beilin of Middlebury (Vt.) 6-3, 6-4, but Lundell then lost to Michael Thoeresz of Redlands (Calif.) in the second round 3-6, 6-2, 3-6.
Junior Adam Morgan lost his first round singles match to top-seed and defending national champion Matt Seeberger of UC-Santa Cruz 2-6, 1-6.
The singles and doubles tournaments will continue on Sunday and conclude on Monday.
