Track & Field Gets Final Tune Up Before MIAC Meet at Maverick Open

The Gusties had a trio of event winners and set one school record in their final tune up before next weekend’s MIAC Outdoor Championships.

MANKATO, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in rainy conditions Saturday at the Minnesota State-Mankato Maverick Open. The Gusties had a trio of event winners and set one school record in their final tune up before next weekend’s MIAC Outdoor Championships.

Madi Kes (Jr., Jordan) highlighted the day by setting a school record in the triple jump. Kes’ mark of 39-0.25, which won the event and currently ranks 16th in Division III, broke her own previous record of 38-9.5 set earlier this season. Eva McClelland (Fy., Maple Lake) finished third in the triple with a leap of 31-4.5. Kes also took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18-1.75.

Wyatt Quiring (Sr., Fairmont) and Mark Rud (Fy., Waconia) also won events for the Gusties. Quiring ran the 400-meter in 48.90 for first place, while Rud won the 800-meter in 1:57.45. Jack Marble (Sr., Eden Prairie) was close behind Rud in the 800, taking fourth place in 1:59.65.

Will Janzen (Fy., Minneapolis) finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:40.21. Jackson Miest (Jr., St. James) took fourth in the 1500 at 4:21.61.

In the field, Peter Oviguian (Sr., Eden Prairie) took fourth place with a throw of 140-7 and Josh Beiswanger (Sr., Mankato) closed out the meet after a weather delay to finish second in the hammer throw with a distance of 184-1, which currently ranks 25th in Division III.

Gustavus now prepares for the MIAC Championships, which will take place May 12-13 at Bethel.
