Track & Field Puts Together Dominant Performance at Maverick Invitational Posted on February 17th, 2023 by

MANKATO, Minn. — Gustavus track & field competed at the Minnesota State Maverick Invitational Friday, and collected quite a few impressive performances across the board.

Julia Severson (Sr., St. Cloud) and Sydney Hagen (So., Starbuck) posted the fastest DIII times in the mile, crossing the line in 5:41.16 and 5:41.57, respectively. Danielle Miller (Jr., Waconia) led the Gusties in the 60-hurdles, posting the best DIII time at 9.33 for fourth overall. Megan Geraets (So., Mankato) finished second in the 400 with a time of 59.41, while Kailyn Walukas (So., Eau Claire, Wis.) added a second place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:27.00. In the 200-meter, Kate Carlson (So.) finished first (25.65) followed by Geraets in second with a time of 26.06.

On the men’s side, Jonah Kalsnes (So., Thief River Falls) finished fourth in the mile with a time of 4:37.23. Wyatt Quiring (Sr., Fairmont) took first in the 400-meter, crossing the line in a time of 49.84, followed by teammate Seth Zeitchick (Sr., St. Paul) in fourth with a time of 51.89. Tyler Smith (So., Norwood Young America) led the Gusties in the 800-meter, placing first with a time of 1:56.40, followed by Markus Rupnow (So., Mankato) in third (1:58.74). Tucker Wallin (Sr., Red Wing) led the meet in the 1000-meter, taking first with a time of 2:31.36, just two-tenths of a second shy of beating the school record.

In the field, Danny Bies (So., New Hope) placed third overall with the highest DIII finish at the event in the high jump, clearing a bar set of 6-3.50. Josh Beiswanger (Sr., Mankato) continued to dominate in the weight throw, this time with a toss of 16.17 meters.

Gareats finished third overall in the long jump with a leap of 5.54 meters, the farthest of any DIII athlete, the second farthest in school history, and a personal best, followed by Maren Sundberg (Fy., Eagan) who finished sixth with a jump of 5.22 meters. Madi Kes (Jr., Jordan) posted a school record in the triple jump with a distance of 11.71 meters, good for 11th in NCAA DIII this season. Annika Poe (Sr., Big Lake) took second in the shot put with a toss of 14.55 meters, breaking a school record and taking second in the meet with the second farthest throw in NCAA DIII this season.

The Gusties now prepare for MIAC Indoor Championships next week, while Birgen Nelson (Sr., Edina) is set to race at the USATF Indoor Championships tomorrow afternoon.
