SAINT PETER / DULUTH, Minn. — The Gustavus men’s tennis team competed in a series of three matches on Saturday, hosting St. Olaf for the team’s first MIAC matchup of the season, followed by Central later in the day. The Gusties also sent a squad to Duluth for a MIAC contest with St. Scholastica.

Against St. Olaf, the Gusties won convincingly, with Nick Aney (Sr., Rochester) posting wins in the No. 1 singles spot and again in the doubles with partner Daniel Fouchier (Sr., Nootdorp, Netherlands). The Gusties combined for a perfect 9-0 score against the Oles, picking up their first conference victory of the season.

In Duluth, the Gusties were dominant once again, with Indraneel Raut (Sr., Oshkosh, Wis.) leading the team in the 1-spot for singles, emerging with victories of 6-0 and 6-4. Two Gustie doubles teams rolled to 8-0 victories, as the pairs of Alex Budde (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Gage Gohl (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Rafael Costa (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taona Mhwandagara (So., Harare, Zimbabwe) defeated the Saints in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots.

The Gusties went 9-0 against Central to finish the day, completing the perfect performance. The Gustavus doubles teams won by scores of 8-1, 8-3, and 8-1 to start the match off, while all six singles rolled to victory over Central. Caleb Fridinger (Jr., Woodbury) posted two 6-0 wins in the No. 3 singles spot, and, with the help of partner Luke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville) rolled to a 8-1 doubles victory.

“Overall the guys put together a solid day today,” said Head Coach Tommy Valentini. “Our depth and doubles were big keys for us. The guys stick together and supported each other very well and we stuck to our game plans in both singles and doubles throughout the day. We’re thankful for the positive results and for the way we competed and we’ll look to build on today moving in to next week.”
